When parents look for schools for their children, they base their search on a few things: the quality of the teachers, the reputation of the school, as well as the annual results obtained in the GCE 'O' level examinations. But to a student, progress at school is not so easily narrowed down. Instead, it is a combination of individual ability and good teaching rather than good luck.
My first two years in secondary school were halycon days for me but hell for my teachers. I was in the school netball team and thus spent all my time practising at the game. Furthermore, most of my team-mates were comparable to me in their school achievement, that is, we were not top of the barrel in the academic results, which made me feel that there was no need to try too hard in my studies. The teacher in charge of netball in school was also an english teacher, which made me proficient only in that area. In fact, my best friend and I were so often at the bottom of the class rankings that we actually began to feel quite proud of our consistency!
However, things changed when Miss Loh became our form teacher in Secondary Two. She was a warm and gracious lady who was also firm in her belief that students must develop their potential to the fullest. Thus began her reformation of me. She talked to me quite often to tell me how capable she thought I was and how much I was wasting my own ability. But I always relied on the excuse that netball training left me no time for much revision. Only when she was about to leave for Japan to further her studies did I realise how much her encouragement had meant to me. In the end, I decided to give my studies a try.
Lo and behold! I actually scored marks good enough to be selected for the best class in the following year! I was ecstatic and infinitely grateful that she had opened my eyes to what I could really do. I began paying attention in class and realised that the teachers were really good. As long as I listened in class and did my work diligently, there was no problem with understanding the lessons. Out of this experience came my discovery of two qualities I possessed that went a long way towards academic achievement - my good memory and quick understanding.
Through my secondary school years, my progress at school was the result of my own hard work and the teachers' efforts at teaching. Their examples inspired me; even when my classsmates were all dozing off because the teacher was boring, I remained attentive because I had realised that beyond the monotonous tone was a wealth of knowledge that I wanted to know. That really kept me going, for until today, the sense of curiosity that was sparked by my attentiveness in class has not left me.
Luck has never been a factor in my studies. If I did well, it was because I had studied hard and thus did not need to be lucky to have 'spotted' the right questions to study for. Once I am prepared for the test or examination, luck was of no importance. Hence, my progress in school has always been a potent combination of good teachers and my own ability rather than mere luck.

wow! What an amazing life story of yours Tch Zizah!
Firstly,How are you?Feeling better now?Get well soon & come to school!
I truly agree with you that luck does not play a major part to one's success or good perfomance in school.
Success is a reward for one's diligence, patience, perseverance & efforts.Success is not mere luck!
I shall say that apart from one's own hard work, the presence of committed teachers is another factor that contributes to one's success.
If one says that luck is all he needs to succeed then he's wrong. Will he blame luck or destiny if he fails in school?Luck is just an excuse for those who do badly in school.
If one refuses to realise that luck is the reason for his failure and refuse to strive harder, then he'll never change. He would say that it's just his bad luck every time he fails.
However,we must remember the saying:
No pain,no gain!
Good teachers teach using a wide range of effective, useful & fun methods to enhance the students' learning journey.Good teachers know how to simplify the topics/lessons so that it is easier for the students to remember.
Hence, good teachers is another important factor for a student to show good perfomance in school.
But the major factor to success is really the student himself. At the end of the day,no matter how good the teacher is,if the student himself does not work hard to do better, then nothing will change.
Actually in life, you can never change a person or shall i say you can never change anything!!!
All you can do is change yourself!A good example would be:If you are not happy with the world you live in because everybody is just too self-centred.You cannot change the world but you can change yourself or your response to what's happening around you.Maybe you should not EXPECT everybody to be considerate or tell yourself that everybody is different & not everybody is good.By this way, you are better prepared and you do not 'expect' things to be the way you want it.Hence, you will be less offended & happier!
That's all i have to say!
Buh-bye teacher!

I totally agree that good teaching methods and a student's own ability play a big part in the progress of the student's studies. However, i should say that good luck MAY also contribute to one's progress. For example,a student is sitting for a crucial test but she is not well-prepared for some topics but in the end she still got very good grades as the topics she didn't study much didn't come out in the test(or maybe only a few questions). So, isn't this luck?Or is it just mere coincidence? I would have to say that she is lucky this time round but could she guarantee that she would be lucky the next time she sits for an important test or even exams?Beside, how often can a person be lucky? Thus, a person CANNOT only depend on luck to achieve good grades.
I belive that one's success really depends on the person him/herself.Even if he/she has really good teachers with good teaching materials to teach and guide he/she, in the end,the person is the one who would be sitting for the tests/exams not his/her teachers.I'm sure that if he/she works hard with perseverance and patience,he/she would most likely to succeed unless he/she faces some panic attack or other unavoidable circumstances during the test/exam.However,I'm sure(again) that a student who is really well-prepared would not face these problems. Then again, anything can happen in the exam hall.
In conclusion,I would say that one's success relies on his/her efforts and hard work ,also with help, guidance and teachings of good teachers.

first of all, everyone is different.
you can be either highly linguistic, kinesthetic, artistic and so on. and that makes alot of difference. for example, not everyone can can memorize two whole chapters in a single night in preparation for a test the next day. alternately, not everyone is good at sports. it all depends on one's developement in the early stages of life.
and to sort out all these different abilities, we have different classes. which then narrows it down to the quality of teachers in those classes.
teachers are insanely (lol) important as they must be able to identify every student's weaknessees and strengths and work with that. in this passage, the narrator had already been enrolled in a good school with good teachers. eventually her (his?) faliure became her own fault when she (he?)realized that she (he?) could do well if she (he?) tried.
personally, i believe luck is a tiny factor in success. speaking from experience, though. haha.
so from the above discussion we see that you need excellent teachers, a highly mantained (good) attitude and just a bit of luck to pull you through the part of life called school. =)
get well soon, cher!
zaffieRAWR~ ^_^
In my opinion, it is unfair to pick only one as all these three factors contribute significantly to one’s progress.
If one has the best of teachers and the smartest of minds but with the absence of luck, then failure is inevitable. The same goes for someone who is mentally gifted but has lazy teachers. In this case, his potential is not stretched to the fullest.
In conclusion, all these factors are essential in determining one’s grades in school. However, I think the most important thing is to have the strongest of desires to succeed.
to me, hard work is the main factor in order for students like me to achieve success. luck is another matter altogether. like the author herself, she'd rather play netball than studying because the thought of ' there are other students who are not top students like me' pulled herself down. this became the cause of the bad exam grades.
one has to motivate himself in order to achieve success. consistency also plays a good role to succeed in life.
=)

Hmm... The topic sounds familiar. Oh, yeah. Mid-year exams composition question.
To me, correct teaching methods and we ourselves can make us do well in school.
A competent teacher with the proper teaching techniques will be able to make students understand what is being thought. Understanding is one of the most important factors to do well. However, before a student is being given an opportunity to understand, he/she has to listen to what a teacher has to offer.
We have to take note that hearing and listening are two different things. By hearing, the sound waves coming from the teacher’s mouth are not interpreted into words we understand. On the other hand, listening means paying attention.
In addition, if the teacher is a good motivator, he/she will make students feel confident in doing well. Then it is up to the students themselves to use their own initiative to work hard in their school work.
No matter how adept a teacher is, students may still not excel if they themselves do not care to put in effort in their studies. Furthermore, different people have different ways of thinking, different attitudes, different ways and abilities in coping with stress, and so on.
Thus, it is clear that teachers and the ability play a big role in acing in studies, rather than pure luck as we have to work hard in order to achieve something. Success does not come served on a silver platter.

Get well soon!
Halimah :)
A(ahem!) boring teacher may result to students sleeping during lessons..or maybe it's just the result of sleeping late at night..(e.g.me..)a student cant help dozin off in class..it's just the eyelids won't listen to their owners..one minute they're wide open, the next it's droopin and saggin, you can't help but sell your soul to the dream world(not that there is a toll or somethin)..
Actually,to be honest..i'ven't taste victory/success(in school) yet. maybe a few times..but the taste's not strong enough for me to go and bounce and scream and shout or cry...you noe what i mean..
Luck may help a student survive if he/she does not study earlier(e.g. me again..)..good teaching methods obviously need to be present in every school in the whole wide world...some teachers tend to continue talking during lessons when some of us do not understand the topic..and it results to us ignorin, talkin, sleepin, doodlin, dreamin...
Success comes ONLY when a student really, really, really studies for his/her exams/tests.maybe until their eyes felt like poppin out of their sockets..
Therefore, the equation to a good progress in school is:
resilience + patience + VRY VRY VRY good teaching methods + redha pada allah + both parents' do'a + a bit of luck + 100% studying till you feel like dying --> a VRY VRY VRY excellent marks...
my last sentence: teacher, i know i've been spouting nonsense since the first letter of the sentence until now...i'm sry..
(you've been a great teacher , tch Zizah..)
hehe $o$
SITI ASMAA BINTE MAHMUD BIN AHMAD BIN YASIN...
In my opinion, good teaching methods and a student's own ability play an important role in a student's life rather than depending on mere luck.
i do not believe that one can solely depend on luck to be successful in life without putting in efforts. They can be lucky at times but not so lucky at other times.Hence, luck does not always determines one's future.
Yes i do agree that good and qualified teachers play a big role in developing their students. With guidance and good teaching materials, they can help their students in achieving his/her goals in the future.Teachers are limited to only teaching, advising and guiding students. The rest are up to the student's ability and effort to prove themselves in achieving their dreams.
Eventhough students have been taught and guided well by their teachers but without efforts from them, they cannot expect good grades and for some they depend on luck.
In a nutshell,I therefore believed that students cannot depend solely on luck but should put in efforts to what they have been taught.

p.s:get well soon teacher...
Good teaching methods are all we need. If a teacher is good in teaching, students understand with what the teacher explained, of course they will achieve success. Imagine if the teacher is boring, keep reading from the book in order to teach us, we can also do that at home, all we need is to come to school and ask what we don't understand. Okay, when the teacher uses good teaching methods, students who are not really clever can turn into an intelligent student. But sometimes good ability also play a part to succeed in school. When one is gifted, they can always score well in exams. Sometimes, when one is an ordinary human being, when they study, they can score well too. Luck totally is not needed.
DEEYAANAA :D
First and foremost, I have to say I am not among the smart students in Sec3P. If I were to make any progress in school, and I have to pick one of the three factors, I’ll give credit to good luck. I am most certain that many will choose the other two factors. So why do I take the odd one out?
It's time for reality check.
Teaching has always been a part of learning. Whether it’s good teaching method or not, we students end up learning something new anyway. A teacher may bore half of the class, but the knowledge brought by her is worth more than just useless naps.
From a good teaching method, the students are able to bring our their best abilities. If the teachers are not helpful, the students eventually can help themselves assisted by their own abilities.
If there is anything to change our lives or any kind of miracle to bump into us, luck is the answer. Then if you disagree, how ever does the term “good luck” serves for? Wishing good luck before sitting for examinations is common, why is it so if you believe it’s all about good teaching methods and your own ability?
If you aren’t lucky, nothing as good as good teaching methods and your own ability will come to you. Think about it.. good luck=)
I do agree that good teaching and one's ability determine how far a student progresses in school but I think luck does play a part, though not significantly.
You might not be confident of a topic, hoping and hoping that there are no questions for that topic. Turns out that there are only a few questions on that topic. This is just sheer luck, either you're lucky, or you're not. But you cannot just depend on luck to score.
Good teachers can affect a student's progress in school. A dedicated and motivating teacher can inspire her students to study assiduously. However, even if you give the best teacher to the laziest student, he or she will most probably not do the homework given, much less care about getting good grades. After all, the students are the ones sitting for the examinations, not the teachers.
The most important factor in a student's progress in his or her academic achievement is the student himself/herself.A diligent student will definitely score better than her lazy peer. It does help to have a good memory and the ability to process and understand easily too. These two qualities give a student a headstart in achieving success.
In conclusion, one's ability, paired with good teaching methods, and a bit of luck contributes to the academic progress and achievement of a student.
Nur Shabrina Amirruddin
P.S. Get well soon teacher! :)
I'll have to agree that luck does not play a big role in assuring us to get good grades. Maybe afew questions are answered with the help of luck, but other then that, its pure memorisation / hard work / understanding.
So yea... Its our own ability and good teaching methods that will help us to achieve success. If we study smart and believe in ourselves, for sure we would pass that subject. Plus with the help of good teaching, teadious/boring subjects will be fun and it'll be easier to understand.
However, in my opinion, the main factor for success is THE one and only, *jeng jeng jeng*, ABILITYYY *yayy -__-*. The teachers are only there to guide us. If we're too lazy to study, what could the teachers do...? Force us to study? Well, it'll just be fruitless attempt. Our ability contributes a whole lot to our success in life. Ability to study, ability to work hard, ability to persevere and *well, you get what i mean right*
Sooooooo, we just need to STUDY!!! and believe in ourselves...
hahahhaa...
- Naqiyah; zeroNINE
* eh, its looooong -___- i think there's to much craB in it, hahahaa, you get the joke? -________-" *
* oh yeaa, issit fruitless or futile ah? tht sentence sounds funny... hmm *
Firstly, students need a teacher who have good teaching methods. Imagine having a teacher entering the class and make no point of coming in. Just come in and ask the students to read one whole page. Even the students can do that at home, right?
Next, having the ability to focus while the teacher is teaching in front. This ability can lessen the burden of the students at home by not having too much to revise on . Then, the ability to make an effort to study and revise what had been learnt in school. Many students feel lazy to revise at home, including me :). The reason: TIRED. What an excuse! Haha.
Some students may have the good luck in examination and some don't.
Maybe the word 'good luck' just goes to the gifted students who merely have the ability to make it happen without even studying hard.
So, for me, I think that good teachings and my own ability are the credits for my progress. :)
~THE END~
Quite long,huh?
Must be talking crap. HAHA!
~Siti Nur Syahirah Bte Md Hairi~
We all need good luck once in a while.Let's say there was a very smart student who has very good teachers. There was a test one day but she totally forgot about it,thus didn't study for it and in the end fails it.Isn't she unlucky?
However,I think luck plays a minor role in a student's progress in school. It is the student's ability with the help of good teachers that is most important.
A 'not so smart' student can excel in his studies if a good teacher is able to sharpen his abilities and motivate him. Therefore, good teaching methods are important to a student as it affects his understanding as well as interest in that subject. But having a good teacher doesn't mean anything if the student is lazy and doesn't care about his studies. His ability would be wasted, just like in the author's story.[Though if the teacher is good enough, she may be able to change the student..]
A student's ability depends on how he uses it.He maybe smart but very lazy,or less smart but very hardworking,or both smart and hardworking,or-you get what I mean..But everyone uses his/her abilities differently and is taught by different teachers,so what the biggest role is varies to different individuals.
I personally think that for a student to succeed,he has to make full use of his abilities and listen attentively to the lessons taught.Good teachers play a big role too, followed by a touch of good luck, but he has to work hard in order to succeed.=)
-Arinah
Good results all depends on the student's ability to do well, has a positive mindset and most importantly great determination and confidence.
Teachers do play a part in a student's progress but they are merely a guidance or a push to help us score well.It all comes down to the student himself. It is he who has full control of the mind to succeed. Committment of the teachers and student does as well come into the picture.
Okay for now lets not pour down all the pressure on the student and give some extra credit for his hardwork and effort.Come on there could be several factors or reasons that could lead to a student's progress. For example, friends or parents who show undoubtfully continuous support throughout the student's whole life may indeed play a minor part.
Moving on to what we all have been waiting for, LUCK.
I, contary to many popular belief, say that i do not believe in luck. Don't get me wrong, I do believe in luck but just not in studies. You see it's not luck it's coincidence. It just so happens you get a good result based on an easy exam. You may oppose, however, I'm telling you what I think.
Following through as to what I said, what if lets say the student fails given all the required help and blames luck and his own mind. Then he definitely needs a boost of self-confidence from the people around him. There are always failures in life, trust from my own experience, and we need helping hands where ever we are.
Oh my,I'm writing as if I know any better. Weird ...extremely
Well in my case,I'm those that always rely on lady luck.
MUAHAHAA.
What's consequential is the interest in studying. If one does not like to do what he likes,he'll not put in the best effort on it. For instance, demand a 2 years old to read a book and not let him play. Tell me,how comical is that?
If it's interest, one needs to scratch his own back and generate it by himself.
Interest is not the be-all and end-all of the progress in school. When boredom strikes in class, heads will touch the desk or perhaps the floor.
Teachers need to downgrade and humiliate themselves by not acting their own age with their students.
Students usually like those down-to-earth teachers that crack jokes and have an entertaining lesson that they look forward to. This way, they feel more awake in class!
The environment is,too,an important factor that shapes a student. If a class is full of wet blankets that does not even want to participate and do something well, then that's a minus point.
Everyone needs to help and advise each other. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours and we'll lighten up the class spirit! =)
From the above discussion, progress in school is not just purely about luck. It's the work and the people that count.
Siti Shafiqah =)
FICKY FICKY NANANANANA~
hi.
Okay, like what most of us say, i honestly think that hard work is the ultimate recipe for success. Without even trying to understand and keep on revising our studies, luck can do nothing much.
(am i the only one feeling bitter here? heh)
I must say, good teaching methods too play a part..but a minor one, compared to our own effort.
Despite having a good teacher, if the student doesnt push herself forward..nothing can be done.
Therefore, one also needs to plant a good attitude in herself.
Trust me, seeing others running forward while leaving you behind will make you more aware of the state you're getting yourself into.
If I were to talk about myself, I'd say that in my entire school life, I had been depending on luck.
But recently, things are not doing so well. So, it's definitely a high time for me to buck up and be serious about my studies.
done. i got a test tomorrow, and i havent really study. talk about contradicting one's words eh.. hmm.
Nadia Ismail
I must say this really is an inspirational life story for me.
In my opinion, a student's progress in school is mostly because of his own willingness and determination to study.Hence, their own self that helps bring success.
This is followed with the teaching quality that teachers have in educating students.
Lastly, good luck, which holds the least importance.
When a student is able to achieve success,he ought to have confidence,a settled mind and self-motivated.For example,if one has a high iq,he could capture almost everything what his teacher teach. One who is motivated to do his own revision or time management also contribute to progress in school. It's possible for any smart human to do that. It's a matter of whether they want to do it or not.
Though some may not realize they have the ability, they could afterwards if their teachers play the right part.Let's say a student always have problems in studying. The reasons that are always common to be heard is of boring lectures from teacher, boring subjects, tired or just too lazy to bother. This is the time where good teaching methods take action.
Where there's interesting surrounding, there's active and lively people.(i tink so)So if teachers are able to improve their teaching by making their class livelier and fun, they could boost the student's energy up to be interested in the subject.Just imagine a teacher coming into class, give draggy lecture and nonstop hw,which makes students feel like dying especially early in the morning.
Lastly, the factor that plays approximately 4% for me in life.GOOD LUCK.Luck is not a thing that's always there every now and then.It cannot always promise us good thus we cannot depend on it.Luck is a matter of unexpected
things.Like if there's a difficult question, then we choose any answer that turns out to be correct.Thats good luck,we didn't do it confidently. What if we had chosen the wrong one, that would be bad luck.
In the final analysis(:P),a student's ability in studies gives him his satisfying progress in school.
-nazeha-"sori if i send this late"
I agree that luck does not contribute to a students' progress in school.Although sometimes it happen,we cant depend on luck for our success in school.Good teaching method to me plays a big part for my success in school and of course later come my own ability to get good grades in class.
If a teacher were to depend everything in the textbook,i dont think that will help the student to progress more but instead will stay consistent through what he/she is exposed to.Learning in a different way and in different environment can widens a student's thinking and thus he/she will be a able to think out of the box and have a critical mind. This will help the student's progress in class.
But it is also important for the student to have the interest to learn and take the initiative to study and work hard. This is when own abilty takes place. To be successful in school,he/she must know how to manage his/her time between study and play.
Thus, good teaching methods and own abilty is to me the key to a student's progress in school.
I hope you are well when you read this, teacher.
Everyone count on luck when they are too lazy to strive for their goal. If they didn't get what they want, they will thought that their luck has turned sour, not based on their actions. But luck doesn't bring you far, however it seems that luck smiles on you when it sense that you are trying your best. So we shouldn't depend solely on luck; will you count on yor luck when a car is dashing towards you? Life in school is the most important aspect in our life, thus we shouldn't waste it. But it can affect us in more ways than one. The school environment; the teachers, your classmates has an influence on you. When you are happy at school, you will usually achieve good results. And this happiness can be granted with your own ability to strive for your goal or with good teaching methods or both. Good teaching methods are hard to come. When there's none, you have to work hard on your own. Having a good teacher is a bonus. He or she helps uplifts our spirit, helps us see our path in life, and also shapes our personality. But in the end, it is always based on our ability and our actions. Having a teacher to help us not only in school but also in life is like seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. But then one shouldn't always expect others to be there for them. Instead one should ensure that the spirit to achieve success inside him does not fade, at all.
Yours sincerely,
S.Nabihah
Hold on a minute. Is this teacher Azizah's life story or was it extracted from somewhere? i thought it was an extraction?
Haha..anyway moving on..
Luck. Sheer dumb luck. Haha (i took that from Harry Potter). I'm not sure about what to comment because my mind's kind of blank right now. But this is an assignment.
So, as i was saying. Luck is kind of dumb. I mean. In the real world, there is no such thing as luck. Either things happen because somebody made it happen. Or that somebody has no clue as to what he had done to make that thing happen. Like Hafiizah said, Luck is jus an excuse for failures.
If you've worked your head off for one thing, and you succeed, i doubt it that you'll actually give all your credits to luck itself. I mean you'll surely think, 'I did my very best and this is the award i receive for striving hard.'
I can't say much because my dad's offing the internet connection in a while. So i hope you understand what i mean teacher.
With that i end my comment with as'kum.

"Beyond the monotonous tone was a wealth of knowledge that I wanted to know." I strongly believe that one's progress in school should be credited to good teaching methods and our ones ablility.
Knowledge is to sought and does not come without hard work and patience. Good teaching methods from good teachers are important as teachers are one of the most important medium to ones knowledge. and knowledge means success. A good teacher will guide and bring their students nearer to success. A teacher plays a part in shaping their students character and ability.
Success does not come rolling to ones feet. Efforts are needed. For a person to succeed, hard work is important as a student could not jump up to the peak, success. With much hard work, efforts and patience, a person will be rewarded wit success. Be it slowly or even immediately.
Luck may happen at times. But we should not be too dependent to luck. Nobody can be lucky always. It's not like a person like lindsay in the movie, "Just my luck" really exist.
In conclusion I would say, ones progress in school or even success outside, is to be credited to good teaching methods by great teachers and also hard work and patience from the student themselves. Luck is possible but sure is rare.
Marinah Mohamad MnM
possibilities! oh i got that from phineas and ferb. they like to invent stuff. and that possibility can also be for other stuff thatn inventions. it can be for how you gonna ace those tests of yours and.. WHAT IN THE WORLD AM I TALKING ABOUT? i'm tired. goodnight and hope you're better teacher! A.maths test. A.maths test. A.maths test.
I agree with the writer that a student's progress in school has always been a potent combination of good teachers and his/her own ability rather than mere luck.
As a student, I feel that dedicated teachers with good teaching skills are important in order for the students to better understand the subjects that are being taught. Poor teaching skills may result in students losing interest in their studies. This is why the ministry of education has provided courses for teachers to improve their teaching methods. Teachers play a vital role in students’ life. Students are able do well in their studies with the presence of teachers who are able teach them patiently and constantly motivate as well as guide them.
However, one’s progress in school is not only dependent on good teaching skills. One’s ability is also another factor that contributes to his/ her progress in school. A student may be surrounded by dedicated teachers with good teaching skills but this will not benefit him/ her if he/she doesn’t have the ability to discipline him/herself to study hard and stay attentive in class. One’s ability to study diligently and consistently will result in her doing well in her studies. Positive attitudes towards studies and perseverance will also help him/ her attain good grades. If we maintain a positive attitude and stay attentive, dull lessons will not hinder us from achieving success.
Luck does play a role in one’s progress in school although it is not a major determining factor. For example, a student may study hard for a maths test and the teachers had taught her well until she understands the topic really well. Unfortunately, she didn’t manage to do well for the test. In this case, many will say that luck was just not on her side. (Personally, I’ve experienced this before.) Alternatively, a person may not study for a particular test. Fortunately for him, he managed to score for the MCQ section although he chose the answers for every single question blindly. Many people will say that it was just sheer luck. So who says luck doesn’t contribute to one’s progress in school?
On the whole, we must never depend on luck to do well as luck may not always be on our side. Good teaching skills together with individual’s ability on the other hand will determine one’s success. I believe that success will come to those who work hard and persevere (: This reminds me of my school motto "patience and consistency are keys to success":) So personally, good teaching skills and my ability have always contributed to my progress in school. Hmmm Luck... maybe just a small percentage ;)
In my opinion, both good teaching method and students' own ability play a part in ensuring students' performance in school. Good teaching method really help the students to understand the subject they study more easily. Teachers need to have good teaching skills in order to make their students understand more clearly of a subject. Students' own ability is the most important as it ensures their future. If the students know the importance of education and really want to excel in their studies, they will study hard and persevere. If they themselves do not have the interest to study, their performances in school will not be ver good automatically. Therefore, they need to have their own ability to excel in order to achieve good results in school.
-wahidahashim-
Hmmm.Good teaching methods,an individual's ability and good luck..Such difficult options to choose from.
Naturally,as a student myself,we tend to rely on our ability and good luck.It is rare nowadays, to find a student that is truly inspired by his/her teacher as teenagers nowadays tend to look up to individuals their age and not old, boring teachers who talk about wonders[oops.] and tell us about their daily life and past experience[Zzz..].
I am not saying that the teachers are not qualified. We know they are but we, students usually depend on the hardwork we put in and quite a number of us also depend on "sheer good luck".
I am not superstitious or anything but, when we already too lazy to study, we tend to say that we have given up and we do HOPE and WISH that whatever little bit we study is going to come out in the exams.
When it does,we 'BLAME' it on luck.
To hit the nail on the head[ehem.], there is no such thing as luck, really.
When a student is able to study ++ manage his/her own time and the patience of the teachers in giving notes and MOTIVATIONAL lectures, success is surely going to come knocking at his/her door.[cehwaHH]

Good teaching methods, your own ability or just purely good luck,eh?Well actually, all three play apart in my progress in school.
Why?
Without good teaching method,
its hard for me to focus in class.
So boring + lame + sleepy.
Yawn.
Without my own ability,
even if the teacher is damn good,
and i still cant understand a thing, whats the point eh?
Hopeless.
Without luck,
no matter how smart I am,
no matter how cool the teacher is,
failure is inevitable.
Good teaching methods plus my own ability and a bonus,LUCK! equals to success.
Worite?

I think sometimes luck come into the picture. If a student is lucky, he may have not missed any questions, get the ones he studied, and answered all questions carefully.
If not, he might get back the paper with questions that he have not studied, or a series of unexpected careless mistakes.
However, good teaching methods and personal ability plays a larger role. These are the main factors that contribute to the consistency of a student's progress.

hello teacher...
me Haziqah right here
Firstly,i really like your life story during your secondary years...not like mine so boring:(
Well, in my opinion i strongly disagree that my progress in school depends on luck.to me the luck is obvious, you can see it. if you study, then your luck will be good but if you are not studying hard enough, your luck will turn the opposite.
The teachers too play an important role in the students' progress in school. because they were their second mum and teach them at school. students look forward to interesting lessons. According to statistics, students are more attentive in classes with teachers that taught in an interesting manner different from the old and boring kinds of teachings. Furthermore, the teachers too act as their role model in school.
But at the end it depends on in the students themselves, because they were the ones that will sit on the examinations, the teacher wont sit for their students exams. And if a student is too busy with their CCAs he or she must be able to manage her time properly.
In a nutshell our progress report depends on our own ability and not luck.
